Elbow River Flooding

Water Management Plan

Impacts on Water Quality

The source of the Elbow River is Elbow Lake, located 2,130 m (7000 ft) above sea level in the Elbow-Sheep Wildland Area of Kananaskis Country. The Big Elbow and the Little Elbow converge at the Recreation Area at the end of higway 66 about 33 km west of Bragg Creek. The river flows through the Elbow Valley district of Kananaskis, along highway 66. It runs some 25 kilometres from the Little Elbow Recreation Area to the Kananaskis gate and on to Bragg Creek and Calgary. There are many campgrounds, hiking, horseback, cycling and ski trails set among extraordinary scenery. The highlights are Allen Bill Pond, Forgetmenot Pond and Elbow Falls where a paved interpretive trail leads to a lookout over the falls.
